Truth or Consequences

Many international tourists have an idea of the United States that is based on mostly on film and television and tend to plan holidays in the United States that may reinforce these impressions. While New York City and Florida have a strong tourist draw, heading to New Mexico will challenge any preconceived notion that the United States by characters from on ’Friends’or ’The Sopranos’.
New Mexico is a state with a distinct culture that resulted from a mixture of Mexican and Native American influence. The region features deserts and mountains, including the southernmost region of the Rocky Mountains. It includes the well known ski resort of Taos and Sante Fe, which is known for its adobe buildings and thriving art scene. The famous South western cuisine is available everywhere from the high end restaurants to greasy spoon diners.
One thing I would say is consider getting insurance before you travel - if you already have equine insurance or house insurance, approach your insurance company to see if you can get a good rate on travel insurance too.
For the budget traveller looking to get a taste of real New Mexico, a trip to the small town of Truth or Consequences should not be missed. It was originally called ’Hot Springs’(which should give you a clue why a visit is so fabulous) but in 1950 changed its name to that of a popular American quiz show. Riverbend Hotsprings, has outdoor baths on the banks of the famous Rio Grande, http://www.riverbendhotsprings.com/. Rooms include unlimited use of the outdoor public baths and there are kitchen facilities available. This means that you can explore local grocers and markets and try your own hand at Southwestern cuisine.
It is a short trip into the small but hospitable centre of town, and you can pop into any of the local restaurants and be greeted with the ubiquitous question ’red or green’with your order. The green is generally hotter than the red, but if you are a neophyte go for ’Christmas’which is half red and half green!
