Chicago is known for its architecture, though, not necessarily for protecting it. A recent article in The Chicago Tribune, highlighted the long debate about how well Chicago protects its own history. If you are visiting Chicago in the summer, you won’t want to miss the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s amazing tours.
http://caf.architecture.org/Page.aspx?pid=183. Their renown boat tours continue until the last day of October and leave several times a day. They are a bit pricey at 32 USD for the 90 minute tour, but the view from the Chicago River is one of the most amazing ways to enjoy the rich and varied heritage. Their walking tours of Chicago’s neighbourhoods are significantly less expensive at 15 USD for a two hour walk, have a different pace, with more information and less wind.
Taking a look at their website, you might decide you want to explore Logan Square or Historic Pullman. Places you would never even think of going on your own. If you are planning a visit to Chicago and thinking of reading up, one of my personal favourites is “Devil in the White City”. You can learn an amazing amount about the World’s Columbian Exhibition of 1893 and the drama behind the stunning buildings that were part of the City Beautiful Movement.
The CAF offers a companion bus tour for fans of the book which should not be missed. If you are a more do-it-yourself type of traveller, the Chicago Loop Alliance offers a selection of free downloadable walking tours with maps. Consider cheap car rental usa to get in and out of the city if you’re staying on the outskirts. Your choices include: Public Art which features the much loved abstract Pablo Picasso’s Sculpture and Anish Kapoor’s cloudgate; landmark tour which includes the start of route 66 and the old Marshall Field’s building; and a theatre loop which takes you through the revitalized loop theatre district.http://www.chicagoloopalliance.com/looploop.php
