Sleeping Cheap in Chicago

Summertime is the time to be in Chicago. Down town Chicago has almost continuous free music from June through September. From concerts at Millennium Park to Jazz, Blues, and Gospel Festivals in Grant Park and over 400 neighborhood festivals where you can have a taste of Greece, Italy, and Poland. The difficult thing for many budget tourists is finding very affordable (or cheap) accommodation. The best bet for enjoying the free music down town is Hostelling International’s J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Hostel. Here for $29 a week night, you can be in the center of it all and enjoy walks along Michigan Avenue, Lake Michigan’s surprisingly clean city beaches, and the world Famous Art Institute of Chicago. If this seems still too pricey and you want to try to have the cheapest urban experience why not try the cheap sofas route and check out couch surfing, Chicagoan are very friendly and if you are a visitor from anywhere outside of the United States you would be giving your host a much appreciated outsiders'view and a fun chance to show off their city. If you are thinking about a longer stay check out Craigslist. It is used heavily by young creatives and ’hipsters'to find housing and jobs. You can check out the short term accommodation offered, but don’t be intimidated by prices. If you are set on visiting, post an offer of what you would be happy to pay per night to sleep on somebody’s couch. It might not be the most luxurious experience, on the other hand you may land a Francophile (Anglophile, student of german etc) who will be keen and possibly have really nice digs. Do be warned, however, Craigslist is known locally as also having a vibrant and somewhat raunchy dating scene, so make you intentions clear, and think twice is you are travelling by yourself. And don’t miss the 24 hour taco joints!
