Live Music Venues in New York

New York is the New London – at least when it comes to the live music scene. Once a mecca for influential musicians such as Hendrix, Bowie and Led Zepellin, England’s capital has slipped down the set list and is having to take a backseat as NY’s breeding ground spawns one amazing band after the other.

The distinctive NY sound introduced by the Strokes at the arse end of the 90’s is still going strong and the punch-drunk city that never sleeps continues to throw up talented and engaging bands from well-known artists like Interpol to the not well so known, but equally engaging The Deathset (okay they were officially formed in Sydney, but are based in Brooklyn).

Music lovers visiting New York are well advised to head to Williamsburg where there are plenty of intimate and dingy lairs, some created out of abandonded storage spaces, to embrace pinging strings and booming drums. The three-storey floors at the Delancey Lounge is where the young and hip hang out, whilst the plush Bowery Ballroom is known by locals as the rock palace.

Southpaw in Brooklyn is arguably the coolest music venue in a city brimming with cool music venues. Home to fresh, young talent on the rise, this spacious and comfortable venue is ideal for live music, dancing and pool.

The Lower East Side, albeit a little more touristy, has plenty to offer a discerning crowd. If you’re looking for good quality grunge, Cakeshop and Arlene’s Grocery fit the bill, whilst Pianos and Chloe 81 attract chic fashionistas in search of thudding electro that makes their ears bleed.

Jazz is another hot favourite in New York and good quality Jazz venues are dotted all over the city. One word of warning though, unless you’re prepared to listen to commercial drivel, steer clear of Greenwich Village!
